Guarana, espresso and insomnia: tales of an energy fiend Part-1

As anyone within walking distance of a 7-11 will tell you, energy drinks, "charged" snacks and highly caffeinated products are all the rage. The products are the bounty of choice for everyone from late night gamers and database programmers to long haul drivers looking for an extra boost on the last leg of a shift. Depending on who you ask, the preferred means of caffeine will differ greatly. Some prefer the sickly sweet taste of beverages such as TAB energy drink and Jolt cola, both made with synthetic caffeine and a landslide of sugar. While others gravitate to more natural offerings containing Guarana (a natural caffeine extract from the Guarana berry found in the Amazon) and, for those old school folk among us, good old fashioned coffee.

But who wins the war here? Are natural caffeine offerings made from coffee beans and Guarana really better than their synthetic counterparts? What can be expected from one to the other? I hope I can shed some light on these questions based on personal ingestion and experience.

While i have long been a coffee fiend, I like my other java junkies, have occasionally strayed in search of a better buzz, and a more sustained "kick" than coffee has traditionally provided. Aside from simple wanting a stronger energy boost, I have noticed that the constant consumption of coffee can really wreak havoc on your stomach. It was this reasoning that lead me to find what current marketing machines refer to as "vitality drinks." These beverages, while still promising the energy kick you seek, also contain a list of ingredients one would not normally find in your typical energy drink. Aloe vera, B vitamin complexes and Guarana and very prevalent in these new products. The idea, so say the manufacturers, is to provide a slower, more sustainable boost without the crash and burn feeling normally associated with RedBull and even espresso.

I have scoured the depths of the refrigerators located in my local convenience stores and supermarkets looking for the ideal mix: a product that will provide the energy boost I seek without the dreaded after effects i have come to expect. My search has lead me through a cornucopia of beverages with such ridiculous names as Beaver Buzz and Cocaine.

While I will say that beverages predominantly based around natural ingredients such as Guarana and coffee beans tend not to make me feel quite as jittery, this debate is one that will require further explanation and research. Stay tuned.
